It is the duty of every man to render to the Creator such homage, and such only, as he believes to be acceptable to him. This duty is precedent both in order of time and degree of obligation, to the claims of Civil Society. Before any man can be considered as a member of Civil Society, he must be considered as a subject of the Governor of the Universe. - James Madison, A Memorial and Remonstrance, 1785
One of the hallmarks of a truly free society is its' acceptance and protection of religion, irrespective of who you worship or don't worship. I myself am a member in good standing (only needing to be baptized to confirm said membership!) of my local Seventh-Day Adventist church and I find myself defending religious liberty/freedom more and more.
Not because I have to as a conservative but because, as a child of the Risen Christ, I want to.
There is a difference in those two; trust me, there is.
